The basics of soccer are very easy. If one learns the rules, get in shape with fitness, and if one practices the basics skills, then with confidence, that player can be successful at soccer.

Just like in any sport, practices make perfect. Time, hard work, and dedication can lead you to great opportunities within the game of soccer. The simplest skills are ones that should be learned and practiced on everyday to get your game fitness up and to get your touch right.

Dribbling

One of the most basic of all soccer skills is dribbling, the ability to carry the ball past an opponent while being in control. Every player, including the goalkeeper, must be able to dribble the ball at some level. Some time during a game you will be called on to move the ball on your own, whether you have open space or all available teammates are covered closely by the opponent.

The key to dribbling is to use both feet to kick the ball ever so lightly without losing control at a comfortable speed for you.

Tackling

Defense is an important skill in soccer, if know one can get the ball then the other team will score more and win. One key element to defense in soccer is the tackle. This is where you take the ball directly away from the dribbler. It is important that you pick the right time to tackle. If you dive in early, thee opponent may be past you and on their way to shooting a goal. If you hit the player and miss the ball, the opponent will be given a free kick.

Shooting

With the end goal of soccer being you must score more goals then your opponent, you must be able to know how to shoot, with pace and accuracy. There many ways to be able to shoot the ball.

With many strategies to shoot the ball the main points of shooting are to be able to get in on frame first and foremost. Shots wide or that don’t test the keeper aren’t worth the time.

Shooting isn’t all about power, you need to be accurate to get the ball away from the keeper and other defenders.  Aim your kick ball away from the keeper, towards corners.

Driven Hard Shot

  • Like the driven long pass, you must drive through this shot, making sure that you don’t lean back and kick it over
  • Make sure eyes are always on the ball, you should know where you want to shoot it.
  • While striking it the plant foot needs to again be close enough where you won’t be off balance far enough way from the all where you don’t kick yourself.
  • Kicking and then having your leg and bodies momentum carry you off the ground is a good way to get power with the ball.

First Touch/Trapping

Trapping the ball is also called your touch. This is done by receiving a pass in a variety of ways. You can take a tough with all parts of your body except your hands. Having a good touch and field awareness can get you out of many tight situations. Also having a touch can make you play a lot faster and cleaner, meaning you’ll have more time to decide on your next move.

When receiving a ball like playing ground pass open up your foot

Cushion the ball- when it comes in, when a ball comes in with pace, you must be able to control the ball as defenders will be closing in on you.

Take your touch with a little push in front of you so that you can have room to step into a pass

With practice, you should open your body so that with you touch you can see the whole field. This only permits if there is no one coming on your back.

Passing

Passing a ball in the game of soccer is really the key to scoring. With the end point is to score more goals then your opponent, you must pass around to move the opponent and take advantage of the space created. There are different ways to pass a ball, and with these here instructions is a really good way to practice the skills portrayed.

  • On the Ground: A standard inside of the foot pass on the ground is a simple yet effective pass.
    • Turn your hip outward
    • With your plant foot plant firmly toward the target
    • Knees slightly bent and body facing target
    • Then with the inside of your foot, kick the middle of the ball and follow through on the target

Technique is very important for soccer players. It can be the difference between making a good pass from a great pass. There are many different techniques that soccer players have to master. Things like your first touch, passing, shooting, defense, and many more.
